| Title: Sunday FIshing Report Nov 15, 2009 Date: 2009-11-16 GMT: 01:56:07 To: Capt Fred I have not been offshore fishing for more than a month. I noticed a break in the weather. It has been relatively calm for a few days. I planned to do my usual combi trip of some casting and bottomfishing. We left the Yacht Club at Serasa at 9am. The inshore area was quite choppy but we could still make quite good speed. Our first destination was to Pelong rocks to do some casting. Along the way I noticed that the huge oil drilling rig near Pelong has not moved from a few weeks back. I guess it must be drilling right there just a few miles offshore. As we approached Pelong there were lots of offshore floating fish cages. These was just installed a short while ago by some Chinese aquaculture company. There were 3 boats already at Pelong when we go there. We casted about 30mins and go only one strike. Not much action so we went on to 2nd part of our trip. Bottomfishing. We had to go slow a little slow as the wind picked up and waves got higher. The waves were headon with the direction we were going. The boat would go airborne and land with a boneshaking thump when we go fast. So we slowed down to about 15knots. It took a while but we got to the fishing spot. There were no bites on the first drop. After that I hooked onto a grouper about 1Kg and the action just continued for the rest of the day. The groupers were surprising mostly big (1kg above). When we bring up a grouper about 700kg, Capt Nonoy would joke "Aiyah...small one". There were some big ones lurking at the reefs. Capt Nonoy rod bend got him all excited at hooking onto the big one but the smiles on his face turned into a dismayed look. The fish got away. Upon reeling in the line, he found that the grouper he caught was eaten by a bigger fish. With the teeth mark, it was most likely to be a big Barracuda or Tenggiri. We experienced several more huge pull where all the lines were cut clean. Mostly likely from the teeth of these toothy fish. The sea condition got worse towards the afternoon. The wind was blowing.Waves height was reaching 2M. We could see heavy storm all over the landmass. At sea it was sunny. It got very difficult to fish as the waves was high and wind was too strong. We just could not position the boat over the reef long enough to fish effectively. So we went home. Unfortunately, we have to head towards the storm on the way home. Very rough seas, strong wind and pouring rain but we got home. Wet but happy. |
