It is weekend again and time to do some fishing. My original plan was to go Udang Galah fishing along Tutong river with Azmey(Pengail magazine) but he just informed me that he checked the water condition and that due to the lack of rainfall, the water salinity is too high. So the trip is postponed.
So I have to make alternative plans. Where do I go? There is a typhoon in Taiwan which could make the sea rough. What about going to Belait river in the Labi area? The condition would be great for fishing Ikan Lawang.
Decisions.decisions. What shall I do this weekend!??!

I called up Capt Nonoy on the Apollo to ask him what is the sea conditions. He said rough in the storm today but otherwise calm.

Tungku area is good. In fact the breakwater further right (towards Muara) is quite good.
The boat launch next to the Marine Police is good but needs repair.
Berakas area would be good.

Based on your experience, where do you think we can have new boat launch. Since Jerudong & Pengkalan Si Babau is always congested.

There is more to it than that. I am sure if there is a group that goes out to organise to build boat launch, there will be corporate sponsors.
But first you would need government involvement. You would need land. You would need access. You would need approvals, etc.

Thanks Capt for the info

Below is taken from Bruclass forum posted by Siang Malam:

" The government should build more boat ramps along the entire beach line (from Muara to KB). Perhaps, one ramp for every 5 km. This would reduce concentration like what we have now. It would also save fuel cost and time. People would no need to tow their boat very far away from their home to the boat ramp. And if they wanted to fish at any particular area they would just go to the ramp that is very closer to that fishing area "

I personally agree to it but we can't just leave it to the Government. Maybe corporate or big company should be involve in this project. Especially to those who will benefit from this industry.
Fuel saving, Time & Safety is what we are suppose to look at...

If you go on a Sunday, there are usually 5-10 boats around. Use your fishfind to locate the area with depth of 420-450ft depth. This is the best area to jig for Hairtail and Tengirri.
Anchoring would be better if you plan to hang around that area for a while. Anchoring would allow you to tabur(chum) fish to your boat. Bringing up the anchor from such depth is a lot of work so make sure you park the boat right the first time.

I've been there twice & the deepest i've try is around 300ft. Any chance if you have the coordinate? On my last trip spotted few boats drifting around there. What's your advise to drift or anchoring once I spot the area?

Hi Hafi,
Welcome to our local fishing forum. Good to hear that you are working with jigs. PE4-6 rods are good enough for local jigging. Where do you jig? The most popular and possibly the most productive is the the Abana trench just out of Muara. That trench is quite long and fish are best caught only found in one small area. It is in the area with depth of 400+ft. Usually there are lots of boats there. Only problem is that you have to be patient fishing there. Sometimes you go for many hours without a single strike. Then again sometimes it is non stop action.

Hi Capt.. How are you sir. Did drop by to your shop few times hoping you were there. Grab few jigs & vmc hooks of course most of the time window shopping. Lately most of my fishing trip is practising jigging technique. Equipped with PE4-6 rod. From the last trip only manage to get "Laroi", though hopping to catch tenggiri or good size fish. Basically need some advice from you or friends out there on the technique & equipment. Any chance from you guys out there? Also potential location somewhere Muara area..

Apollo was chartered by a group of local fishermen to fish at the Dropoff during the weekend. Unfortunately during their trip out the sea was extremely rough. Most of them wanted to turnaround and head back to shore. Some of the anglers were feeling pretty sick from motion sickness.
Capt Nonoy evaluated the situation and thought the sea was rough and not comfortable to fish. The customers all also wanted to go home.So Capt Nonoyh turnaround and head for shore.

The weather was good and there is the problem of the H1N1. It is best to avoid crowded places. Staying home all day on a Sunday would be a waste.

So it is off for a cruise with my family along Brunei river to watch the sunset and have dinner on board. The air was cooling and the Sunset was just beautiful. It is best to cruise from Muara towards Kampong Ayer because you will see one of the most spectacular sunset with the mountains and rainforests in the background and the calm Brunei Bay water reflecting the setting sun.
We did a U-turn after the sunsets and my kid wants to do some fishing at the moorage. We switched on both the big spotlight to attract fish but only small ones came. In the end my son caught a nice Sembilan weighing about 1Kg. Funny thing is that there used to be lots of Badukangs around but we caught none this time.

We left for shore at about 10:30PM. Great day, Great fun.

Yes, i know theres atleast 3 to 5 in brunei and i think there are only 2 4000FA model, 1 2500FA and 1 1000FA. Since its no more in production, guess its a model to keep as there wont be anymore others owning it. The reason i can think of inspite the sales rep commenting the stopping of marketing fireblood is due to complaints on the reel but i believe it is the price as well. I have read forums with comments regaring the price and therefor causing it to stop as not many people are keen to buy a reel just for casting at that price. But i bought one and yea, it was worth it.

Not a complain here but just a few cents from my thought.hehehe.

Sorry no more fishing videos from Dubai as I didn't get a chance to go again prior to me returning here. Infact I was suppose to join a trip to the same GT spot last Feb BUT VOLUNTEERED to be taken out due only the smaller 30footer boat was available instead of the originally booked 40footer due to some engine problem.

Even then those who went also were quite dissapointed due no major catches. The Red Sea was literarry RED.....due to red tide. Even until now, its still hoovering....after almost a year since it was first detected (Last July). There were lots of reports of monterous GTs and Tunas of upto 50-60kgs which were washed ashore and their gills were packed by the red algae.

The whole fishing industry in UAE & Oman was very badly affected. They balmed it on the global weather changes and also the availability of the required nutrients for the red algae to prosper/multiply.The prices of fish skyrocketted!!!!! Even the humble tengirri and Kerapu was priced at about B$20-25/kg!!!!

Luckily the Arabian Gulf was not affected, so while I was still there, we went chartering boats to go fishing almost every weekend. Both for recreational purposes as well as for the pan. The water in the gulf are not that deep though, maxing out at only 80ft!!!! With almost totally flat sandy bottom, with the exception of few coral formations.

Anyway, my fone no is +673 8753663.

BTW, you will be at CFFS this afternoon for the seminar and Q&A right?

Ciao!

I sold my desktop last month, junior prefer laptop so i grab. Am thinking of selling at $800, i know Acer new model quite cheap but HP still a HP, value was there.

My friend from KL went out on monday, actually they 1 2 charter Apollo , One of the anglers was 2005 Labuan competition champion (johor) which on board apollo b4, due to fully booked so i called up Saimee to arrange Kahar or Ishak boat but both of them can't make it so asked another friend arranged ah nan boat.

They bring over jigging gears prepared for dropoff amberjack, heavy gears for biggies but......this noon chat with them they only fish at 200++ ft water, catches not so good, the whole noon catching small krisi and some bottom species, only manage to hook up one 7kg ungah and few 2-3 kg fish at night. Was told anglers from KL very disappointed with Brunei dropoff after watching Takat aji aji video, well, i guess skipper not headed to dropoff. Their next trip will be to KK, hope they will come back n fish Brunei water again.

Went out last Sat but nothing great, just few awat2, pisang amas, kurisi & kurapu. Nothing big to actually let me test the potential of the rod and my outdated reel.

Berapa ringgit U expecting for the HP notebook? Why don't you simply grab a desktop pc since U said you are heavy (24/7) into downloading movies from the net?

Huh????

Calling me uncle? Shouldn't it be the other way round?

1) I (think I) am younger than most of the kakis
2) considerably still new to the fishing scene (both fresh water as well as deep sea)...I haven't gone pond fishing yet!!!!!
3) my gears are considerably outdated and possibly cheapos.

HOWCOME you changed hobby now? From fishing, now (heavy) into home entertainment/theatre system....and also computing????

It was the other way round for me. I used to be heavy into home AV system. Now my Yamaha DSP A1000 amplifier (top of its class about 10yrs ago) is collecting dust in the storeroom. Only using one of those (basic) fully integrated home entertainment system from JAMO for listening to music and watching movies.Asal ada saja lah. :)

Why not go for Mac computers? MUCH better and more graphic applications dedicated. BUT will have to only use fully licensed softwares...whic will be more expensive.

Ciao!

Uncle,
My sanyo cam sold already, nothing in hand at the moment, D90 a good choice. Am frenzy with pc nowaday, spend all $$$ at pc gadget, this month i bought a sonic gear Armaggedon 7:1 surround system ,3 external HDD ...160 GB for x-rated stuff, 320GB for games and 500GB for video. Bought a Western Digital media TV player yesterday but notice that it doesn't play rmbv files so i exchange goods with them. Went to Megastore this morning asked them special order a player which read rv, rmbv, avi and xvid for me, hope it arrive soon.

Here i would like to blame capt recommended me to buy new acer laptop, he claim years after years no problem, i bought for 2 month LCD monitor spoil already (white screen) now send back to agent for replacement, damn.

What's the purpose of buying Tiagra 130, how big the pelagic you wanna target here? 50 series too big for our water already and that reel weight exactly 5kg, do you have a fighting chair or u wanna jig with it?

Spend 1k or above to buy a stella 20k nothing special, tons of people can afford that, so do i, but spending 1k buying a stella 1000 i will thumb up lihai u guys.

Mr. stella,

Just hoping that I wouldn't be tempted to acquire more Shimanos for the time being!

Ciao!

Aiya! Been telling you that I am now back in Brunei for good...since mid March.....few times.

Either;
1) you alrdy too old and your memory is starting to fail you, or
2) you got STM(Short Term Memory)...aka forgetful, or
3) you got FWS(Fishing Withdrawal Syndrome)....ha..ha..ha.. :) , or
4) all of the above...ha..ha..ha..

Jangan Marah....just having a bit of fun! Haven't seen you since I returned, been hiding kah?

Anyway, haven't got that much of a chance to play around with the SONY HD Video Cam as been fiddling around with the Nikon D90.

Lets meet over coffee sometime during the weekend.

Ciao!

To: Capt Fred
From the shop he listed i guess he target low end gear. It's true you don't have much low end product, i notice your shop carrying mostly high end gears or i should say your shop have the most high end choices which other shops don't have.Be frank, you shops have more item than some s'pore stores.

What you are saying is very serious? Our staffs constantly monitor the prices of our products to ensure that it is fair and competitive. We indeed do have expensive products but those are high end products such as Ripple Fisher and Shimano Stellas.
Could you be more specific on which items you are comparing on pricing?

And what exactly are you talking about with choices and quality?

When I first started fishing as a kid, it was a F&N Orange can with a roll of 15lb mono line bought from our neighbourhood grocery shop. In those days, the soft drink cans were not made from aluminium like today. It was solid so it made a good spool. There were no rods sold at the shops except for the few choices found at Chop Eng Joo.
For weights it was the discarded spark plugs from our neighbourhood workshop.
Hooks would be a bent needle from my mother's Singer sewing Machine box. Steel needle are brittle and they break when you bend them. As kids, we watched a lot of sword fighting kung fu movies. In those movies, there were always scenes of blacksmith burning a sword over a fire and then hammering it.
Well, it gave me the idea. So I heated the needle over a flame till it turn yellow. After cooling it, there is no problem bending it. And we have our hooks. Worms were the only bait we had access to. But it worked well.
We did not use any rods. We simply cast it out by spinning weight around and letting go towards the directionw we want it to go.
I caught my share of freshwater fish as a kid. The most common fish caught in our neighbourhood was Karok.
We have all kinds of new fangled fishing gear today but I reminisce those days with happy memories when fishing was just a simple past time.

I have arranged to have a seminar where a representative from Shimano will talk about its latest products, new technologies, explain what its features are and best of all for customers to ask questions and complain if any.
I think this would be a good thing because as a customer myself, I have always wanted to find out things about products that a retail store could not answer. I always have the wish to talk to the manufacturer directly.

It would held on Friday 29 this month at our Sengkurong branch at 2-4pm. Please call 2228951 to register.

To: Capt Fred
Agree with you. Local species need to be protected. Few fish along Sg Brunei tributary gone.. such as kitang, sumpit, penjulung, kembura.. I use to catch these fish esp when i went for "merambat" for prawn.

Went fishing yesterday near pancang Batu marang & caught 2kg+ badukang. Only after 3 months waiting, with her big fat belly full of eggs. Take a photo & release her though one of the friend insist to take it back as a present to his friend.

So far it hs not reached the Gadong and other tributaries of the river. This is probably because the Toman would not swim into brackish water of Brunei river so they are confined within that area only.
However, I have heard many stories of people catching them at Wasan reservoir and releasing them into river and pond elsewhere.

I think the authorities should look into this matter. Otherwise soon we will see Tilapia and Toman in our forest reserve Tasik Merinbum and see the demise of our local species.

Toman will just gobble up everything in sight. Do we have in Brunei any authorities responsible for this type of potential eco disaster?
