Title: 1st march 09 trip with Capt Fred Date: 2009-03-03 GMT: 00:43:16
To: Lures
After hearing about the Yellowfin school spotted at the nearby trench, we were excited to go after it on the weekend.

There were also reports of Tongkols schools on Friday.

The sea was quite calm in the morning. Our first stop is to do casting near Pelong on light tackle. There were already a few boats there when we arrived. I quickly put on a small Shout Dangan jig(20gm) and cast it as far as possible. After just a few cast, I was hooked onto a Todak (Long Tom) and got a decent fight from it. Akudou was using poppers at first. The Todak was chasing his popper but could not hook on. After several attempts, he gave up on the popper and put on Dangan jig as well (heavier at 40gm). Within a few cast, he hooked and landed one as well.

The Todaks were all over that morning. We had strikes after strikes but unfortunately the Todak kept throwing the hook. We had enough fun already so we decided to go after the YFTs.

Arriving at the trench, there were already about 10 other boats anchored. We drove around asking if anyone spotted any YFT or Tongkol. They are replied that it has been quiet. We jigged a few times. The drift was very fast and our jig were almost horizontal on the drift. Not ideal situation so we left to do some bottom fishing.

Bottomfishing was good however the wind was strong and the sea was getting rough and positioning the boat over the reef was difficult. After landing 2 groupers and an Addidas, Akudou recommended trolling. We trolled all the way back to the trench but not even one strike. By 530pm we decided to call it a day and headed for shore.

We will hunt for the tuna another day but casting at Pelong was great fun and I look forward to doing that again soon.
